I think Max is still great but Autodesk no longer supports it. In an effort to become a profit center, they continually dump old version of the software on people who tried to be loyal. There is no good reason for this, except to make money. And just like the Ford pickup, they have a good truck that works for the right people. They also have made some changes that are a breath of fresh air. To me, they were making Max work for me again. I dont believe I have any equity in the tool or anything of that nature. I love the job I do and I love a great tool. I am not rich.
Autodesk needs to get it together. Max is not what it used to be. I just finished a big pipeline for a 2 year film that I spent 10 months on the clock. When I was hired, we were promised a free perpetual license of Max if we put it through our pipeline. This was last fall. Now, we are forced to do a CARTOVE (non-perpetual license) in a month. Go figure.
The fact that Autodesk is re-releasing Max on the old license terms is enough to make me want to leave. My team is leaving for a better opportunity that does not have a tie to Autodesk. We cannot trust them to make the right decision for us.
Autodesk has done a great job with Max. But Autodesk has not done a good job with Max. Autodesk Max really sucks! It is not worth $500 to not have the latest and greatest if you want to work for Autodesk. Only who will help you find a job that is satisfied with old releases. There is so much new and different features in the 2020 release that only the die hards will get it. People that need to save some money and need to get a job have already moved on.
